Al Shaqab’s Next Trhrilling Chapter: Wadee Al Shaqab
Written By Sonja Smaldone
Al Shaqab has been breeding the world’s finest Arabian horses for long enough to have created a dynasty. The Al Shaqab name is synonymous not only with excellence, but also with the expectation that the newest generation will somehow eclipse the near perfection of their forefathers. At the core of its breeding programme is the triad made up of Gazal Al Shaqab, his son Marwan Al Shaqab and Marwan’s son Kahil Al Shaqab and Hariry Al Shaqab and many others, a unique case of generations achieving World Champion titles and international reputation as sires of champions all across the world. There is a young stallion that has already set out to follow the path traced by his predecessors. His name is Wadee Al Shaqab.
At just seven years of age Wadee Al Shaqab already has an impressive show record. He was Qatar National Gold Champion Colt as a yearling. As a two-year-old, he was named Al Khalediah Silver Champion, Qatar International Gold Champion, Menton Gold Champion and to crown it all, World Gold Junior Champion 2012 in Paris with Giacomo Capacci. In his first appearance as a senior stallion in 2014, he was named Qatar International Gold Champion Stallion with very tough competition of other World Champion stallions.
Arabian Horse literature is crawling with essays and stories celebrating the mighty Marwan Al Shaqab. So, it is worth concentrating more on OFW Mishaahl, the mare who made it possible to bring about this living wonder called Wadee. Bred by Harold and Dolly Orr, OFW Mishaahl was acquired by Al Shaqab Stud from Sheikh Hamad bin Ali Al Thani. At the time, she was only four years old. She was not the most successful show horse nor was she particularly exotic, but, Sheikh Hamad envisioned something special in her. OFW Mishaahl was just an elegant looking and athletic horse. She may not have had the pretty little dished head that is so popular among today’s show crowds but she had the fundamentals to be an exceptional producer, proving that a great breeding mare does not necessarily have to be a show champion herself. After all, her pedigree looks outstanding. Sired by the imposing Canadian National Futurity Champion and U.S. National Top Ten Stallion Mishaah and out of the black OFW Balarina by RSD Dark Victory, OFW Mishaahl boasts six crosses to the legendary Bask, she was a double great-granddaughter of Bey Shah and has additional lines to such great horses like Khemosabi, Bandos, Serafix and Naborr. Of these, Bask, Bey Shah and Naborr also feature in Marwan al Shaqab’s pedigree. We had recently the chance to ask famous handler Giacomo Capacci what are his thoughts about Wadee since their ‘strong and exceptional friendship’ is not secret to anyone in the sector! Giacomo remembers well the time when Michael Byatt informed him that another exceptional foal from Marwan and Mishaahl was born in America; as well the staff at MBA was excited about this fancy super refined colt. No need to mention Giacomo was very anxious and looking much forward for Wadee's Al Shaqab arrival in Italy. For Giacomo, Wadee is a very special animal:” He is very fun to train and work with”, he says; shows and winnings went past but their relationship grew strongly until an unexpected health issue occurred. Wadee had to go through a life risking surgery, it happened around Christmas time and doctors were not so positive about it. That period they spent it at the clinic every day, hoping and praying that he would be fine, and he did came out fine! It was decided to give him complete rest after such a serious surgery and let him grow into the beautiful stallion that he is today. In the meantime, some of his brothers by Marwan Al Shaqab were shown and became World Champion stallions. Wadee’s career as a sire started then and from his babies, Giacomo argues, one can see that he is very consistent in many of the aspects that he represents: Refinement, Elegance and show attitude; additional features that he often passes are: his short head, small ears and his incredible shoulder. They already could see last year his winning offspring in the show ring and this year there will be even more competing on the world stage. Together with Al Shaqab and Sheik Hamad, Giacomo Capacci and his wonderful Team are very excited to show Wadee Al Shaqab once more to the public starting from Menton 2017! The time has come for this stallion to write the next awe-inspiring chapter in the unending Al Shaqab Stud’s legend…
